Why would you experience low pH in hot tubs?

If your hot tub test strips are showing a pH of 7.2 or below, your water is too acidic and could start causing damage to the spa. Here’s what to do to tackle the problem and balance the water for comfortable bathing.

What is pH?

Water acidity or alkalinity is measured by the pH scale. Water in its purest form is a neutral 7 on the pH scale. Below 7 is considered acidic and above 7 is considered alkaline. To maintain good water hygiene in a hot tub, you must regularly test the pH of the water to check the level of bacteria. You can easily check the water balance in your tub by using specific pH test strips for chlorine or bromine.

What does low pH in a hot tub do?

A low pH level in your hot tub water can cause itching and stinging of the eyes and render it unsafe for bathing. Low pH can also prevent your hot tub chemicals from working properly meaning bacteria is more likely to breed. The acidity can also cause damage to hot tub components.

A low pH level in a hot tub can also affect the clarity of the water.

What causes low pH in hot tubs?

Hot tub water should have a pH reading of between 7.2 and 7.8.  If your reading is low, it can be caused by the following:

  • Bacteria from body oils and sweat
  • Contaminants such as grass, insects or dust.
  • Natural water pH level in your area

In some locations, the mains water pH may be naturally unbalanced. For example, the water here in Yorkshire is slightly alkaline to help prevent corrosion of water pipes and fittings. Drinking water is between 6.5 – 9.5pH.

How can you tackle low pH levels?

1. Test your tub water

Test your water every week to check the pH levels. If you use the hot tub everyday, check more regularly. You can use our handy hot tub testing strips for chlorine or bromine to ensure your water is balanced for complete peace of mind.

2. Increase low pH

Don’t panic if your water levels are showing slightly low. You can use a product called EzPlus pH Increaser to gradually increase the levels in your water. Add the product as per the instructions and after 30 minutes, test the water again.
