are hot tubs good for you

Are hot tubs good for you?

You may have heard about some of the health and wellbeing benefits of immersion in water. But are hot tubs good for you?

When and how should you use them? We give you the lowdown on how to use hot tubs for optimum health benefits.

Exercise & yoga

If you fancy boosting the wellbeing benefits of using a hot tub, then why not try some simple exercises or yoga during bathing? Stretching and strengthening muscles are both great ways to build core strength and help you retain good posture. Exercises may be particularly beneficial to the elderly or those sat at a desk on a daily basis, helping to restore posture.

Tired & stiff joints or muscles

If you’re feeling a little creaky or you’ve been training hard, your joints or muscles may feel like they need a little TLC. The calming and soothing effects of warm water will really help with these niggles, providing medication-free relief. Similarly, if you have a condition such as arthritis, then the warm water and jets in a hot tub will boost circulation, offering some respite from symptoms.

Use in short bursts

One instance where a hot tub may not be good for you is if you stay in for too long. As the water is usually slightly warmer than body temperature, hot tubs raise your core body temperature. Staying in for too long could make you feel woozy, nauseous or faint. It’s recommended to stay in for 15 – 20 minutes at a time and ensure you drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated whilst bathing.

Good for your mental wellbeing too

What better way to switch off at the end of a long day that with a good soak? Bathing in a hot tub allows you time to think, focus or perhaps enjoy a spot of meditation. As the warm water raises body temperature, bathing in the evening can aid sleep, which in turn will help with your overall wellbeing.

When to seek professional advice

Occasionally, a hot tub may not be suitable for an individual. It’s always best to check with your doctor if you suffer from high blood pressure or you may be pregnant.

Potential issues

You may have heard stories of skin complaints, Legionnaires disease and other nasties that can be associated with bathing in a hot tub. All these problems can be completely avoided with correct chemical balance, regular filter cleaning and draining a hot tub on a regular basis after high usage. Hydropool hot tubs are so easy to maintain. If in doubt, Yorkshire Hot Tubs are on hand to service your hot tub so you can sit back, and bathe worry-free.

10 year birthday

Happy birthday to us! We’re celebrating 10 years of YHT

This week, YHT are delighted to celebrate 10 years in business!

Why not grab a cuppa and have a read of our history, developments and achievements over the last decade?

To celebrate, we also have some great special offers available throughout this week.

Our humble beginnings

Back in 2010 whilst volcanic ash suspended flights, Instagram was in its infancy and the iPad had just been released, Yorkshire Hot Tubs was born. We opened the doors of our showroom on 4th March 2010 in the height of the recession. Founded by 5 friends with a love of hot tubs, we scoured the hot tub market to find the right brand to bring to the good people of Yorkshire. After substantial research (and a lot of wet testing!) we decided that there was a gap in the market for a high-end product and decided to bring the luxury Canadian brand Hydropool, the World’s only Self-Cleaning Hot Tubs and Swim Spas to the spa town of Ilkley.

The #1 place to find luxury

In the last 10 years, Yorkshire Hot Tubs have grown from strength to strength. We’ve grafted to carve out a niche market in the area to become the number one choice for those seeking ultimate at-home relaxation.

Award-winning service

Back in 2011 when we won the award for Best New Retailer, to our success winning the Hydropool Marketing Excellence Award in 2019, we have continued to offer honest, practical advice and stand apart from the competition. Since opening, we’ve won 13 prestigious Hydropool awards.

  • Hydropool SILVER Award 2010 & 2011 recognising excellence in Marketing, Sales and Customer Service
  • Hydropool NEW RETAILER OF THE YEAR 2011
  • Hydropool GOLD Award 2012, 2013, 2014 recognising excellence in Marketing, Sales and Customer Service
  • Hydropool Most Improved Dealer 2013
  • Hydropool PLATINUM Award 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 & 2015 recognising excellence in Marketing, Sales and Customer Service
  • Hydropool MOST IMPROVED SWIM SPA RETAILER Award 2019

Continuing to improve our service

2018 was a big year for Team YHT. We launched a brand-new website in the summer to help enhance enquiries, increase online presence and provide easier access to chemicals and filter sales online. We also opened a secondary showroom, specifically for swim spa sales, to support the growth of the swim spa market throughout the UK. As Yorkshire’s only dedicated swim spa showroom, we offer wet testing as well as practical advice on design, installation and maintenance of this very special product.

Never failing to accept a challenge

Installations in Yorkshire are always a challenge, but we have never failed! Uphill, down dale, city centre penthouse suites, through fields (saying hi to the sheep as we go), over walls, over hedges, over houses… we’ve even travelled as far as Orkney and the French Alps to deliver the luxury of Hydropool to our customers!

Proudly supporting local events

We’re very proud support the Great Yorkshire Show; the greatest show on turf! We have exhibited at this major event for the last 7 years and look forward to attending again this year. We’re also regular exhibitors at the Harrogate Flower Shows in Spring and Autumn.

Luxury available to all

Since opening, we’ve helped countless people realise their dream of owning a hot tub. From holiday cottages to private homes, our Hydropool hot tubs and swim spas continue to provide a luxurious environment for relaxation, therapy and fun to all.

Let the celebrations begin!

Avoid heat loss

How can you avoid heat loss from your hot tub?

In cooler weather, you may be conscious of the running costs of your hot tub.

The last thing you want at this time of year is unnecessary heat loss from your tub that can increase your electric bills.
Thankfully, with a Hydropool hot tub there are several innovative features to help retain the precious heat produced and avoid heat loss. You’ll save pennies so you can enjoy worry-free bathing the whole winter long.

Good quality cover

Perhaps the most important feature of your hot tub is a good quality cover. 80% of heat loss is through a poorly manufactured cover, so it pays in the long run to invest in a high-quality product that secures the heat. As heat naturally rises, the Hydrowise Thermal Shield hard cover offers unbeatable protection against heat loss when your tub is not in use. An insulated baffle in the fold area also helps avoid heat loss. This clever technology locks the heat in and stop cold air entering the tub.

Choose superior insulation

All Hydropool tubs and spas are manufactured using Nasa inspired insulation in the cabinet for minimum heat loss. Triple thermal shield technology insulation and aluminium foil reflects heat back into the tub area. In addition, black backing around the pipes maximises heat absorption.

Guarding against heat loss

It makes sense that by far the biggest heat loss period is through using your tub at the coldest times of the year. Thankfully for heat loss prevention, Hydropool have created a patented heat exchange system.

  • Eco heat exchange technology. Fully adjustable HydroWise venting for Summer and Winter
  • Motor waste heat recycled – eco-heat exchange venting expels heat in the summer and traps heat in the winter
  • Fully programmable controls. Turn down the heat when you know your hot tub will not be used. Turn up the heat when it’s frequently used.

In fact, Hydropool are ranked in the top three for the most energy efficient tubs on the market.

Screening around your tub

No-one enjoys hot tubbing in a wind tunnel! Think about the prevailing wind direction when planning the position of your tub and design your garden to protect your tub from the elements. Planting climbers or fast-growing shrubs will provide a natural wind break. The addition of a gazebo will also help shield your tub. Not only will taking these steps prevent cooler air from reaching your tub, but they will also provide privacy.

Give the jets a rest

When you turn on the jets, air is pushed through which lowers the overall temperature of your tub. One way of conserving heat is to use the jets less during bathing in the winter.

Filter Cartridges and Plumbing

Proper hot tub maintenance in the winter also helps conserve heat. Look after your filters by ensuring they are cleaned as often as needed. A clogged filter will affect the performance of your tub and use more energy maintaining the desired temperature.

If you would like help maintaining your hot tub, then give the experts at Yorkshire Hot Tubs a call to book in a service appointment.

Banish the winter blues

Banish those winter blues

As the nights are drawing in and we come closer to the shortest day of the year, many of us find that the lack of natural daylight, sniffles and miserable weather make us feel a bit down in the dumps.

There’s no reason to let this time of year get you down! We suggest some ways you can use a hot tub or swim spa to banish the blues and enjoy the small things that make this season great (besides rolling in the snow naked 😂)

Go out with a bang 🎆🎇

Create a night to remember by jumping in your hot tub on New Year’s Eve. Enjoy a free luxurious firework show from the comfort of your very own hot tub or swim spa!

Add some mood lighting ✨

Why not accept the short daytime and embrace the early darkness? Taking a dip in your hot tub at nightfall is both atmospheric and calming. Our range of hot tub lighting options create added ambience. You could even add some candles lanterns on your deck or hang fairy lights around your hot tub area to create ambience in the darkness.

Embrace the weather ❄

On particularly frosty mornings, there’s nothing quite like an invigorating hot tub to set you up for the day. Watching the steam rising and reacting with the cold air is strangely therapeutic. If we’re lucky enough for snowfall in the forecast this year, then head straight to your tub for an authentic alpine experience!

Soothe a sniffle 🤧

If you’re struggling with a pesky cold, your hot tub could be your saviour! Try adding some Dream Scents Spearmint & Eucalyptus aromatherapy for soothing relief from blocked sinuses and chesty coughs. The rising steam will give you some much-needed comfort when you’re under the weather. Couple with a soothing hot lemon and honey drink for the ultimate remedy.

Organise a gathering 🎉

There’s nothing quite like the company of good friends or family to give you a boost when you’re suffering from the winter blues. Invite the gang round for some comfort food and a dip in the tub for some therapy.

Work it out 🏊‍♀‍

During winter, it’s easy to become sluggish and lethargic when it comes to exercise. Finding motivation when all you want to do is snuggle under the duvet is a challenge! There’s no need to feel that way if you have a swim spa though. The warm water will lure you in whatever the weather, ensuring you continue to keep fit and active during the winter season. You may need it after all that comfort food!

Be kind to yourself ❤

If you don’t have a hot tub, why not book yourself a spa day? Or contact us for wet test and see how amazing our tubs are! Contact us for more information and banish those winter blues!

what is a self cleaning hot tub

What is a Self-Cleaning Hot Tub?

And why do you need one?

If you’ve been shopping around for a hot tub, you may have come across several different brands, all promising differing specifications, quality and price. There are many household names you’ll have come across all with special features to entice you to buy.

One brand you may have heard of is Hydropool. A unique feature of the majority of Hydropool’s’ tubs and swim spas is the exclusive ‘Self-Cleaning’ function. Designed to make your life as a hot tub owner easier, the Self-Cleaning function has so many benefits, which we run through in this blog.

Cleans 100% of the water in just 15 minutes

Hydropool Self Cleaning hot tubs have excellent filtration systems. One great feature is that 100% of the water passes through smaller filters 8 times in 2 hours. The regular filtration reduces pressure on the main filter and gives you confidence that the water is continually cleaned. The filters are easy to access and the core filter contains Microban to further preserve its life.

Integral floor vacuum

When you drain your hot tub, you’re bound to have residue on the hot tub floor that’ll need removing before you refill. With a Hydropool Self Cleaning hot tub there is an integral floor vacuum to save you valuable time and hassle. This integral feature removes the need to ever vacuum the hot tub floor and eliminates even the heavier dirt and grit from the floor.

High Flow Filter Surface Skimmer

This clever filter removes the heavier debris from entering the filter by skimming off larger residue. It also removes oils and floating debris that are too large to pass through the smaller filters. This prevents clogging of the pipes and filters.

Surface filtration from the jets

Strategically positioned jets and seating design ensure that the flow of water pushes all debris towards the high flow surface skimmer. This filtration boosts the efficiency of the Self-Cleaning system.

Fully customise your water care system

With Hydropool’s Self-Cleaning hot tubs you have the option to customise your chemical system. Choose from the HydroClear PureWater system, PurEssence and EZCare, all of which give you the most efficient hot tub cleaning system in the world. UV and Ozone water treatments are teamed with the Self-Cleaning features mentioned above to remove 90% of water contaminants.

Saving you time and worry

Another great feature of a Self-Cleaning hot tub is the worry-free indicator. It notifies when the tub is on Self-Cleaning mode and reassures your family and friends that the tub is in operation.

We think that the Self-Cleaning hot tub models offer you the best low maintenance hot tub on the market. If you need any further information or would like to wet test one of our models, please contact us.

best time to enjoy a hot tub

What’s the best time of day to enjoy a hot tub?

If you are lucky enough to own a hot tub, you want to make sure you gain the maximum benefit, both health and investment-wise.

It’s recommended that you use a hot tub for around 15 minutes several times a week. But what is the best time of day to enjoy a hot tub? Let us give you some of our favourite ideas…

Begin the day with a dip

Before you head to work:

If you need a little help waking up or getting ready for the day ahead, why not try an early morning hot tub to awaken your senses and joints? You may be preparing for a big meeting or have a job interview to attend. A spot of meditation before work may help you focus and perform better. You could try adding some invigorating aromatherapy fragrances from DreamScents. Or why not try some hot tub exercises or yoga poses to awaken your muscles?

Weekends before a lazy breakfast:

Enjoy a lazy Sunday morning dip to gently start the day ahead. It’ll work up an appetite for your favourite breakfast and start the day off leisurely. It could also blow away the cobwebs from the night before!

An afternoon summer party

Host a gathering:

What better way to enhance a summer BBQ than by inviting friends or family round to share a hot tub together? It’s a guaranteed way for your guests to relax, chat and spend some quality time together. The kids love a pool party, so why not let them invite their mates to enjoy their very own party in a tub?

Evening relaxation

After exercise:

One of the most relaxing times of the day to enjoy a hot tub is after a workout. Soothe your aching muscles by spending a few moments in a lovely bubbling hot tub. The targeted jets will bring welcome relief after any form of exercise, aiding muscle recovery, blood flow and wellbeing; especially after cardiovascular exercises.

To aid sleep:

Ditch your phone and shelve the boxset to carve some time out together with an evening hot tub. Evening immersion helps both body and mind signal it’s time to calm the stresses of the day and become ready for bed.

Embrace the dark nights:

Rather than huddling round a bonfire this 5th November, why not watch the fireworks from the warmth of your hot tub for an awesome display? Or celebrate the year end in style and enjoy a midnight dip in the hot tub on New Year’s Eve! Pop the champers and create a New Years to remember!

Make it your routine

Soaking in your tub at your favourite time of day in the week will regularly become your routine. It will quickly become part of your warm down after exercise, or before you head off to bed at night. You’ll quickly find the best time of day to enjoy a hot tub.

If you’d like to know more about our range of luxury Hydropool self-cleaning hot tubs, then give us a call or pop into our Ilkley showroom for a chat.

hot tub myths

Hot tub myths – busted!

Are you considering buying a hot tub?

Heard some hot tub myths that have concerned you?

We’re here to dispel the most common hot tub myths, so you can sit back and purchase worry-free.

Myth 1: You must use chlorine

If you’re adverse to the thought of bathing in chlorine, don’t worry! There are alternatives that still give you all the sanitation without that distinctive swimming pool aroma.
Bromine is an alternative sanitising chemical that works best at higher temperatures, so perfect for use in a hot tub. It also doesn’t have the distinctive chlorine odour.
With saltwater technology, your hot tub is sanitised more naturally. HydroClear patented technology purifies water using 50% less chemicals. By utilising ozone, the water is oxidised naturally, passing through a UV light. The combination of the two creates more oxygen to reduce calcium or biofilm build up in the pipes.

It’s worth mentioning that if you have the correct balance of chemicals and the right pH level when using chlorine, the smell should be only slight.

Myth 2: Hot tubs take a lot of maintaining

Not true! A quick 5-minute check every week is all it takes to check that your hot tub is sanitary and safe to use. Testing and topping up of chemicals will become part of your routine. Hydropool’s Self-Cleaning models filter 100% of the water in just 15 minutes so you’re reassured of hygienic water that’s safe for all the family and your friends. Yorkshire Hot Tubs also offer comprehensive service packages to maintain the parts within your tub. Contact us for more info.

Myth 3: Hot tubs are expensive to run

Think your electric bills will skyrocket when you plug in your tub? No way! Thanks to Hydropool’s superior quality insulation guarding against unnecessary heat loss, you’ll be confident that that your electricity is not being wasted. For pennies a day, you can keep your hot tub running at 37 degrees constantly.

Myth 4: The more jets the better

Not necessarily. Whilst you may think a hot tub jam-packed with jets will give you a better massage experience, Hydropool jets are fully targeted to key areas of your body depending on seat depth. Trying the different seat depths in your tub will ensure you target key areas of your body. For example, the S Shape immersion lounger incorporates jets aimed at key areas such as the neck, back, calf and wrists.

Myth 5: You need to turn your hot tub off when not in use

False! Why turn off your hot tub when you can keep it running cheaply and know that you can jump in and use it whenever you want? The only time you may need to drain your hot tub is if you are not living in your property or not using it over the winter. Otherwise, a hot tub is the ultimate in luxury during in the winter so keep it ready for a dip day or night!

Myth 6: Buying a cheap hot tub saves you money

Sorry to break the news but buying a cheaper hot tub may cost you more in the long run on heating bills, maintenance and time. This is one of the most common hot tub myths. Whilst inflatable versions cost you on average £500 to buy, you’re likely to receive higher electric bills due to poorer quality insulation and heat loss from the cover. You may also find that due to the high costs of running, you decide to drain, deflate and pack your inflatable tub away. Such a shame!

With a Hydropool hot tub, you can be certain that the very best quality insulation is used within the cabinetry for maximum heat protection. The hot tub covers are also made of quality density materials with added insulation and fit each hot tub like a glove to guard against heat loss. With all the money saved on heating, you can sit back and relax in the knowledge that you can keep your tub switched on, running 365 days a year. Ready to use at any time!

Myth 7: You can’t exercise in a hot tub

Wrong! You may believe that swim spas are the best option for exercise, but there are several strengthening and cardio exercises you can perform from the comfort of your own tub. Body twists, squats and lunges all get your heart rate up and strengthen your core at the same time. All with minimal impact on your joints. Great for those of us who favour a gentler workout.

Myth 8: Hot tubs are unaffordable

Not with our 0% finance packages! We offer a range of finance options to suit you. Our Serenity range offers you an affordable, luxury hot tub which will serve you for decades to come. Talk to us direct for our very best prices.

We’d love to reveal our great range of hot tubs and swim spas first hand. Come and visit our showroom, book in a wet test, or contact us for more information.

prepare hot tub for summer

Prepare your hot tub for summer 🌞

Ok, so recently it’s been a bit of a washout, but here at YHT HQ we’re getting excited about a long summer of hot tubbing ahead!

You may have already scrubbed the BBQ, swept the patio and dusted off the sun lounger but may not have thought you have to prepare your hot tub for summer.

Luckily there are a few simple tasks you can perform that will ensure zero down-time this season. You can sit back and look forward to a full summer of interrupted bathing.

Spick and span

The most obvious way can prepare your hot tub for summer is to give it a good spring clean. A great way to start is by completely draining your tub. If it’s been a while then an intensive pipe flush such as our EzSysytem Flush is a great idea. Give the shell a good wipe with a non-bleach all-purpose solution. You can then concentrate on the filter. Remove and soak in a solution or for best results, use Instant filter Nu. If the filter has seen better days, then ensure you call us to order an approved replacement.

Adding the correct amount of chemicals and allowing the tub to come up to temperature is the next step. Once it’s up to the optimum temperature, your tub will be fully sanitised and ready for the summer season ahead. As always, if you need any advice on which chemicals to use, then please contact our team for some helpful advice.

And if it sounds like too much hard work why not book a service from us by one of our lovely engineers Nick and Mark who will do it all for you! Just call the showroom to book.

What’s the damage?

During a cold winter your hot tub experiences hidden stresses and strains behind the cabinetry. Regularly checking the interior is a vital part of hot tub ownership. Any signs of damage to the parts need to be identified swiftly to preserve the overall longevity of your tub. Carry out visuals of the seals, pipes and shell to check if any cracks have appeared. Replace any parts as necessary. We handle services and repairs of many hot tub brands, so contact our technicians to carry out a full inspection of your tub if you’re concerned.

Cover check

When the weather is warm your hot tub won’t use as much energy to keep the temperature consistent. You’ll still need to periodically check your hot tub cover is in good condition though.

  • Check and clean the vinyl top and underside with a non-bleach cleaning solution
  • Check for damage or cracks to the vinyl underside
  • Ensure all clips are functioning properly creating an effective seal.

Cool it

On really hot summer days you’ll be searching for ways to cool down. For a refreshing dip, you may want to reduce the temperature of your hot tub. Bathing in a 40 degree tub when it’s already hot outside will leave you dehydrated and uncomfortable. No-one wants to exit a hot tub looking like a lobster! A cool 37 degrees will be enough to invigorate you. If you’re feeling brave you could even turn it down lower than body temperature for total refreshment.

Remember to enjoy your hot tub in short bursts during summer and stay hydrated by keeping a nice cool drink in your ice bucket. Turning down the temperature of your hot tub in summer when the ambient heat is higher will save energy too, meaning a more efficient hot tub.

If you’d like some assistance to ensure your hot tub looks ship-shape for summer, then give us a call. We’ll carry out a full service, drain, fill and chemical top-up to save you the hassle.
